The group Gay and Lesbian Equality has welcomed a move by the Western Australian Nationals to support civil unions for same sex partnerships.

The motion was moved by the Young Nationals at the Party's annual conference today.

Some members spoke against the motion but it was passed.

The Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile was present, but did not vote.

The National Convenor of Gay and Lesbian Equality, Rod Swift, says he hopes other political parties will have a similarly open debate on the issue.

"I think that what they're doing is seeing that it's a reality issue now, that same sex couples exist and they're not going away," he said.

"And so now they're trying to grapple with, and hopefully quite sensibly, how do we recognise these couples and give them fairness and certainty in their lives?

"I think it's really a maturing in the Party, and while there might be some dissent in the Party it is a move forward."
