Men and women demanding the right to same-sex marriages held a colourful rally in Hyde Park yesterday. As well as a number of gay-rights lobbyists, the usual assortment of fringe political groups were represented, including socialists selling anti-imperialist badges.

Others wore T-shirts that identified the wearer as a "Howard hater". Perhaps the best argument in favour of the equal treatment under the law of same-sex unions came on another T-shirt: "We demand the right to make the same mistake as everyone else".
