PROTEST ELIMINATION OF ACT SAME-SEX CIVIL UNIONS

5pm Taylor Square Monday 19th June

Australia Parliament enshrines ‘Straight Australia Policy’ today with the loss of same-sex civil unions in the ACT. Community Action Against Homophobia (CAAH) invites all people who are angry about this to attend a protest at Taylor Square.

“This is not democracy,” says CAAH co-convenor Farida Iqbal, “People in Canberra clearly want their civil unions. Stanhope was re-elected on that basis. It is disgraceful that the Governor General has erased civil rights with the stroke of a pen.”

“We have to defend this legislation,” says CAAH co-convenor Simon Margan. “This homophobic attack sets a dangerous precedent. Who will next have their rights overturned on a whim? Join us in protest on Monday at the site of queer struggle - Taylor Square in Oxford Street. This action will help build for the August 13th National Day of Action where we will be campaigning for the repeal of the same-sex marriage ban and for civil union rights” Margan concluded.
