RANN SHOULD SIDELINE AG ON GAY RIGHTS

Community Action Against Homophobia Blue Mountains (CAAH-BM) will join with at least six capital cities and three rural locations across Australia in demanding equal rights for same-sex couples in the areas of marriage, civil and defacto relationships. Under the banner of "Equal Love Rights For All" forty-five groups have endorsed the second National Day of Action, occurring August 13th and commemorating the 2004 ban on same-sex marriage; passed with bipartisan support by the Liberal and Labour Parties. The first NDA, took place in 2005, and held actions in five cities.

CAAH-BM will be holding a community demonstration in the Mountains and will also be sending a contingent of people down to the Sydney protest which is expecting several thousand people.

It will be the wedding of the year with two Blue Mountains mystery couples tying the knot in an 'unlawful' civil union outside the office of the Federal Member Kerry Bartletts office in Springwood, on August 12th, at 1pm. "We invite all members of the community who support equal rights for same sex couples to come along and celebrate with us, both straight and gay. It will be a fun demo, with an important message too: we support the right of equal treatment for all citizens, and one of those rights being the recognition of their relationship in the manner they choose to have it recognised." said Bryn Hutchinson. Another member of CAAH-BM who wishes to be known only as James noted that "There is broad support for the equal recognition of same sex relationships in the Australian community, but the federal government has been taking very strong actions to quash any attempt to give all of its citizens equal rights, and this is what we have seen in the ACT recently with civil unions."

The NDA occurring the following day on August 13th will see CAAH-BM sending a contingent down to the mass rally and marriage ceremony in Sydney. "Supporters will all be on the second last carriage of the 10:25am train from Katoomba, if you have ever discussed the injustice of the governments stand with your friends or felt that twinge of annoyance at the fact that in this day and age we still not have achieved social equality then hop aboard and join us in taking action to bring about change." said Bryn Hutchinson.
