PUBLIC FORUM UNITING QUEERS ON SAME SEX MARRIAGE AND ADOPTION RIGHTS

LGBTI* organisations from around the state will come together on the 20th of June to launch the National Day of Action for same sex marriage this Wednesday. Organised by Community Action Against Homophobia (CAAH) in NSW, over 20 organisations have already endorsed the protest. Speakers include representatives from the NSW Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby, Australian Marriage Equality, NSW Council for Civil Liberties. Ali Humayun, a gay refugee currently held in Villawood detention centre, will address the public forum via phone hook-up. The launch will be held at 6:30pm at the ACON Centre, 9 Commonwealth St Surry Hills.

"This launch to build the National day of action for same sex marriage is an important step for queer rights, HIV migration bans and adoption bans," says Rachel Evans CAAH Secretary. "We need to be united and strong to fight these latest attacks. Lets' build the movement that ousts Howard and all governments will have to answer to!"

"The Howard government constantly attacks the equality and freedom of not only queer people, but all Australian citizens," says Pete Johnson, National Queer officer of the National Union of Students. "It speaks of a regime with little regard for the fundamental values on which any fair society must be based."

* LGBTI stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex.
