COMMUNITY ACTION AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA MEDIA RELEASE [IMMEDIATE RELEASE] 2nd July 2007 |
EQUALITY FOR ALL! REPEAL THE MARRIAGE BAN - GIVE US CIVIL UNIONS & HANDS OFF SAME SEX ADOPTIONNational Day of Action August 12thAustralia was the first country to have banned same-sex marriage. This ban runs contrary to actions of other Western nations, which have legalised same-sex marriage such as Belgium, Netherlands, Canada, South Africa and Spain. Even archconservative George Bush has not been able to ban same-sex marriage within America. Not content to ban same-sex marriage the Howard government overturned the Australian Capital Territories (ACT) same-sex civil unions in June 2006. Civil Unions are legal in Denmark, Norway, Sweden , Greenland, Iceland, France, Germany, Portugal, Finland , Luxembourg, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Andorra, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Switzerland and Colombia. The Howard government intends to ban overseas same sex adoption in the lead up to the election this year. Adoption by same-sex couples is legal in Guam, Andorra, Belgium, Iceland, Netherlands, Sweden, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom and France. Currently, in Australia Tasmania, the ACT and Western Australia are the only three states/territories which allow same sex adoption. Bush is following suit by proposing to ban 16 US states from allowing same sex adoption. In Australia, we are fighting a staunchly homophobic regime. Any initiatives for relationship schemes are welcome – but we will not give up the fight for full equality – for full same-sex marriage rights, civil unions & adoption rights. Join us in the fight to repeal the marriage ban and for marriage rights for all. Rally for the National Day of Action on August 12, three years after they banned same-sex marriage. 2007 Endorsements
