QUEER PRESS BAN AT VILLAWOOD DEFIED BY ACTIVISTS

Community Action Against Homophobia (CAAH) will defy Villawood Detention Centre’s ban on queer press by visiting with Sydney Star Observer, SX Magazine, lesbian magazine Slit and DNA.

“This is more homophobia to add to the virulent racism of the Federal government, DIMA and Global Solution Ltd (GSL)” noted Simon Biber, CAAH spokesperson.

“This Federal government is the one who should be locked up – not detainees in Villawood – who have broken no laws and done no wrong. GSL want to isolate detainees. We will not allow their strategy to continue unchecked” noted Rachel Evans, CAAH spokesperson.

Biplob Hossain, a gay Bangladeshi and former Villawood detainee noted “Gay magazines were important for our sanity. Join us in protesting GSL’s ban.”

“CAAH will continue to fight to close Villawood and free all refugees. We also call for an end to the uncertainty that former detainees experience - Temporary Protection Visas and Bridging E Visa’s. Bridging E Visa’s refugees have no right to Medicare, they’re unable to work and face study restrictions. We want permanent residency and compensation for pain and suffering refugees experience under Howard’s inhumane policy”, concluded Biber.

Help protest at Villawood Tuesday 23rd January. Meet Leighton Field Station 12 noon.

Let Biplob Hossain Stay! Protest outside Refugee Review Tribunal 9am Wednesday 31st January @ 83 Clarence St, Sydney.
