ALI HUMAYUN SUES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND DETENTION MANAGEMENT

Ali Humayun, the queer Pakistani refugee, while under the duty of care of the Department of Immigration became addicted to heroin. Ali, affected by childhood trauma also tried to kill himself when first detained in Villawood Detention Centre in January 2005.

Placed on massive doses of anti-depressants in a minimum security section of Villawood, Ali was transferred to a maximum security section of the detention centre and taken off all psychiatric medication over a 4-6 week period.

He was placed in a cell with a known heroin user. With no psychological assistance, he then became addicted to heroin. Some guards of Global Solutions Ltd (the company that manages Villawood Detention Centre) also offered to sell Humayun both heroin and cannabis.

Community Action Against Homophobia (CAAH) spokesperson said Shelly Dahl. “Ali is dealing with coming out, away from Pakistan and he gets locked up in Villawood. He is then placed on strong psychiatric drugs, taken off them and offered heroin from the people who are supposed to be ‘looking after’ him. Enough torture of Ali Humayun. Free him now.”

Allen Priestly CAAH spokesperson, said “CAAH is helping Ali take a compensation case to the Supreme Court of New South Wales. Detention management have failed in their duty of care. We have launched a website dedicated to the campaign to Free Ali Humayun. We’re asking for any concerned community members to get involved in the campaign and help free him.”
